One of the most common questions often asked by homeowners with hardwood floors is “When can I put furniture on refinished hardwood floors.?
This is a very good question as most people often end up ruining the very hardwood floors they were trying to enhance by placing furniture way before the finish has set in and completely dried.
The truth is, the amount of time you need to wait before putting furniture back on refinished hardwood floors depends entirely on thing- the type of Polyurethane used.
Typically, there are two main types of polyurethanes-
- Oil-Based Polyurethane
- Water-Based Polyurethane
In this article, I am going to discuss in detail the length of time your refinished hardwood floors will be ready to accommodate your furniture.
When Can I Put Furniture on Refinished Hardwood Floors?
Oil-Based Polyurethane- When to Put Furniture on Refinished Hardwood Floors
Oil-based polyurethane generally takes more time to dry completely.
This, in addition with the fact that more coats of the finish have to be applied to ensure longevity.
For example, if three coats are to be applied, the application can be done in 3 consequential days. In between, each coat must be given at least 24 hours to dry. Stains also require at least 24 hours to dry. Darker stains may require more time.
Factors such as humidity may affect the set drying timeline. If the weather is humid, it will take longer fort he finish to dry. Other factors that may affect the drying time may also depend on factors such as type of wood and species of wood.
So when should you put furniture on refinished hardwood floors?
Well, ideally, you should wait 4 days to move the furniture back in.
4 days is enough time to allow the floor dry and cure naturally.
When moving furniture back, avoid pulling or dragging it. Your floors may be already dry but this doesn’t eliminate the risk of creating scratches, scuffs, and dents.
I recommend using high-quality furniture sliders for hardwood floors in order to make the moving process much easier and hassle-free and also protect your hardwood floors against damage from furniture feet. Some of the best furniture sliders for hardwood floors that I would totally recommend are the FLERISE Felt Furniture Sliders.
And when you finally place the furniture on the floor, I recommend using felt furniture pads like the X-Protector Felt Furniture Pads. These pads will create a strong shield between your furniture feet and the hardwood floor, thus protecting the floor against dents, scratches, and scuffs.
In fact, these furniture pads should always stay in place as an effort to protect and prolong the life of your beautiful hardwood floors.
If you have dogs, I would advise against having them walk on the floor- not until at least 2 weeks are over.
Dogs and hardwood floors just don’t mix. The last thing you want is unsightly scratches all over your floors right after the expensive refinishing process.
Of course, you don’t need to wait 2 weeks to get your furry friend back to the house.
Since its okay to walk on a refinished hardwood floor after just 24 hours (you need to wear socks though), your dog can wear doggie boots as well.
You just have to ensure that they have them on all the time. In fact, unless you’re going to install a carpet or rug on your hardwood floors, always have your dog wear some doggie boots.
You can check out the QUMY Dog Boots Waterproof Shoes for Dogs on Amazon. These are so me of the best-selling dog boots on Amazon. They will protect your hardwood floors while keeping your dog paws safe and even preventing them against slipping on your hardwood floors.
Water-Based Polyurethane- When to Put Furniture on Refinished Hardwood Floors?
Water-based polyurethane generally takes much less time to dry off completely. Each coat needs at between 2-4 hours to dry. So within 48 hours, the floor should be dry and you can safely put the furniture back.
Still, remember to use furniture sliders when moving the furniture back in to avoid ruining the floor. Also, be sure to place furniture pads to furniture protect your floors and help keep them in place.
How Long Before Putting Rug Back on Refinished Hardwood Floors?
You’ll need to wait at least 4 weeks before installing the rugs back on refinished hardwood floors.
This will allow it to cure completely.
But why wait this long?
You see, rugs made from natural fibers such as wool or silk can easily get damage by the new finish, especially if they’ve been dyed with organic dyes. This is unlike rugs made with synthetic fibers and dyes.
The petroleum-based varnishes, waxes, and solvents can penetrate into the rug fibers and dissolve into the dyes. This results to damage of the rug and discoloration of your newly refinished hardwood floors.
That’s why it’s important to wait until the 4 weeks period elapses in order to install the area rugs.
When Can I Put Furniture on Refinished Hardwood Floors?-Bottom Line
Placing furniture back on refinished hardwood floors should be done with great care. It’s important that you wait for the correct moment to place it back, otherwise you risk ruining your freshly finished wood flooring.
Take the necessary precautions when finally placing the furniture back- this includes using furniture sliders and furniture pads. This will protect your floor’s finish while prolonging the life of your floor.
